Safari Circuits

Explore Tanzania’s Safari Circuits

Each circuit connects a unique group of parks and landscapes — from the iconic northern migration plains to remote western forests and idyllic coastal islands.

Northern Circuit

Tanzania’s most celebrated route, connecting four legendary parks. Perfect for first-time visitors, photographers, and anyone chasing the classic Big Five safari. Most safaris depart from Arusha and can be done in 3–10 days depending on how many parks you include.

Serengeti National Park

Endless plains, the Great Migration, big cat encounters, and dramatic sunrise game drives across Africa’s most iconic savanna. Over 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra cross these plains each year. The Serengeti offers year-round wildlife, with the southern plains best from December to March and the western corridor alive with river crossings from June to July.

Ngorongoro Crater

A volcanic caldera teeming with rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo, and thousands of grazing antelope on a single crater floor. The crater is only 260 km² but supports one of the highest wildlife densities in Africa. It is one of the best places in Tanzania to spot the endangered black rhino. The rim sits at 2,300 m, keeping the air cool and the views breathtaking.

Tarangire National Park

Enormous elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, seasonal swamps, and large predators in a quieter, less-crowded setting. During the dry season (June–October), Tarangire rivals the Serengeti for wildlife concentration as thousands of animals gather around the Tarangire River. Tree-climbing pythons and over 550 bird species add to its appeal.

Lake Manyara National Park

Tree-climbing lions, flamingo flocks, hippos, and forest elephants along a stunning alkaline lakeshore. Though compact, Manyara packs five distinct vegetation zones into a narrow strip between the Rift Valley escarpment and the lake. A canopy walkway and night game drives are unique extras not available in most other parks.

Southern Circuit

Remote parks with rugged landscapes, solitude, and rich biodiversity — ideal for repeat visitors and adventurous spirits. The southern parks are accessed from Dar es Salaam or by domestic flight from Arusha and attract far fewer visitors, giving a truly exclusive safari feel.

Ruaha National Park

Tanzania’s largest park — massive elephant herds, wild dog packs, deep gorges, and baobab-dotted plains. The Great Ruaha River is the lifeline of the park, drawing huge concentrations of hippo, crocodile, and predators to its banks in the dry season. Ruaha also hosts one of East Africa’s largest lion populations and over 570 bird species.

Nyerere National Park

Vast Rufiji River wilderness perfect for boat safaris, hippo spotting, fishing, and remote bush camping. Formerly known as Selous, Nyerere is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Boat safaris on the Rufiji offer a unique perspective on wildlife, while walking safaris bring you face to face with the bush in a way vehicles cannot.

Mikumi National Park

Open savanna with dense buffalo herds, strong lion and giraffe sightings, and easy access from Dar es Salaam. Mikumi’s Mkata Floodplain is often compared to the Serengeti for its wide-open landscapes. It is only four hours from Dar, making it an excellent choice for a short southern safari or a stop en route to Ruaha.

Udzungwa Mountains

Montane rainforest, waterfalls, endemic primates, and superb hiking trails through lush mountain scenery. The Sanje Falls hike rewards with a 170-metre waterfall and the chance to spot the endemic Sanje mangabey and Iringa red colobus. Udzungwa has no driving trails — it is explored entirely on foot, making it a true trekker’s paradise.

Western Circuit

Tanzania’s least-visited wilderness — pristine forests, chimpanzee tracking, and raw, authentic safari far from the crowds. Access is usually by light aircraft or a long overland drive, but the reward is some of the most untouched wildlife habitat left in Africa.

Katavi National Park

One of Africa’s most remote parks with huge hippo pools, predator-rich floodplains, and intense dry-season wildlife. During peak dry months, hundreds of hippos pack into shrinking pools along the Katuma River, creating one of Tanzania’s most dramatic wildlife spectacles. Lion, buffalo, and crocodile are drawn to the same water sources.

Mahale Mountains

Wild chimpanzee trekking through lush rainforest on the shores of Lake Tanganyika — a truly unique experience. Mahale is home to around 800 habituated chimpanzees, and treks through the steep forest trails bring you within metres of family groups. After the trek, the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika are perfect for swimming and kayaking.

Gombe Stream

World-famous for Jane Goodall’s research — intimate chimp tracking in steep, forested valleys. Gombe is Tanzania’s smallest national park but one of its most significant. The research station has been studying chimpanzee behaviour since 1960, and visitors today follow the same forest trails that Goodall walked.

Western Rift Forests

Exceptional birding, rare primates, and genuine exploration in some of East Africa’s most untouched forests. These remote forests along the western Rift Valley harbour species found nowhere else, including rare owl-faced monkeys and spectacular bird life. It is an area for serious wildlife enthusiasts seeking something truly off the beaten path.

Coastal + Island Route

The perfect finish to any safari — white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, spice markets, and island culture. Most travellers add Zanzibar as a 2–4 day beach extension after their mainland safari, connected by a short 1-hour flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

Jozani Chwaka Bay

Zanzibar’s only national park — rare red colobus monkeys, mangrove boardwalks, and coastal forest trails. The red colobus is endemic to Zanzibar with fewer than 6,000 remaining. A boardwalk through the mangrove estuary reveals crabs, mudskippers, and a peaceful ecosystem where forest meets sea.

Mnemba Atoll

Pristine marine reserve with vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, dolphins, and world-class snorkeling. The atoll is a privately managed conservation area just off the northeast coast of Unguja. Humpback whales pass through from July to September, and green turtles nest on the island’s beaches year-round.

Stone Town

UNESCO World Heritage streets, historic architecture, spice markets, and rich Swahili culture. Wander the labyrinth of narrow alleys past carved wooden doors, the former Sultan’s Palace, the Old Fort, and the bustling Darajani Market. A spice tour on a nearby plantation adds aromatic depth to the cultural experience.

Zanzibar Beaches

Turquoise water, powdery white sand, and calm swimming at Nungwi, Kendwa, or Pemba — pure relaxation. Nungwi and Kendwa on the northern tip have minimal tidal variation, making them ideal for all-day swimming. Pemba Island, further north, offers untouched reefs and deep-sea fishing for those seeking a quieter escape.
