The Rongai Route is the only path that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It offers a quieter, more remote wilderness experience compared to southern routes, with drier trail conditions that make it especially suitable during the rainy season. The gradual northern ascent and steady altitude gain give climbers a strong chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
This route can be completed in 6 days or 7 days. The 6-day version moves directly from Kikelewa Camp to Kibo Hut, while the 7-day version adds a stop at Mawenzi Tarn for an extra acclimatization day with views of the dramatic Mawenzi Peak. The 7-day option has a summit success rate of approximately 90%.
Both options descend via the Marangu Route through lush forest, giving you a different perspective on the mountain. On this page you can compare both itineraries and choose the one that suits your fitness level and schedule.
The Rongai Route can be climbed year-round thanks to its drier northern aspect. Peak dry seasons of January to March and June to October offer the best conditions. It is the most recommended route during the April-May and November rains because the northern slope receives less precipitation than the southern approaches.
The shorter version moves directly from Kikelewa Camp to Kibo Hut, suitable for fit trekkers who want a faster pace.
Drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. Register and begin trekking through maize farmland and into pine and montane forest. The trail is gentle and well-shaded. Arrive at Simba Camp (Lion Camp) in a forest clearing with views northward toward Kenya.
