The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular climbing route and widely regarded as offering the best combination of scenery, altitude profile, and summit success. Known locally as the "Whiskey Route" for its reputation as a tougher alternative to Marangu, it approaches from the south-west through diverse ecological zones and crosses the famous Barranco Wall before reaching the summit via Barafu Camp.
This route can be climbed in 6 days or 7 days. The 6-day version moves directly from Barranco Camp to Barafu, while the 7-day version adds a night at Karanga Camp for better acclimatization. Most operators recommend the 7-day option because the extra day at altitude significantly improves summit success rates, typically around 90%.
Both versions are camping-based and follow the same spectacular line through rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the Barranco Wall scramble, and the final push to Uhuru Peak. On this page you can compare both options and choose the pace that suits your fitness and summit ambition.
January to March and June to October are the best seasons for the Machame Route, offering drier trails and better summit visibility. The route operates year-round, but the rainy seasons in April-May and November bring wetter, muddier conditions especially in the forest zone.
The shorter version moves directly from Barranco to Barafu, skipping the Karanga Valley camp. Good for fit climbers with limited time.
After registration at Machame Gate, the climb begins through dense montane rainforest. The canopy is thick and alive with colobus monkeys, tropical birds, and mossy tree trunks. The trail gains altitude steadily over about 5-6 hours to reach Machame Camp at the edge of the forest zone.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Leave the forest and climb through heather and moorland onto the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens up dramatically, with wide views across the plateau and the first clear sightings of the Kibo summit cone. Camp is set on the western plateau.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
This is a key acclimatization day. Climb up to Lava Tower at 4,630m for a high-altitude lunch, then descend steeply to Barranco Camp at 3,960m. This climb-high sleep-low strategy is essential for adapting to altitude and prepares you for the Barranco Wall the next morning.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Start the day with the famous Barranco Wall scramble, a steep but non-technical rock section that is a highlight of the route. Continue across the Karanga Valley and climb steadily to Barafu Camp, the summit staging point. Rest, eat, and prepare for the midnight summit push.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Depart around midnight for the summit push. Climb through scree and switchbacks to Stella Point on the crater rim, then follow the rim to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After summit photos, descend all the way past Barafu to Mweka Camp in the forest zone for a well-earned rest.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate where park formalities are completed and summit certificates are presented. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for celebration, showers, and rest.
Accommodation: End of climb or hotel add-on
The recommended version adds a night at Karanga Camp between Barranco and Barafu for better acclimatization and a stronger summit push.
Register at the gate and begin the trek through rich montane rainforest. The trail is shaded, humid, and full of birdlife and colobus monkeys. After around 5-6 hours of steady climbing, reach Machame Camp at the forest edge.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Climb out of the forest into heather and open moorland with expanding views. The Shira Plateau stretches ahead with Kibo looming to the east. Settle into camp on the plateau and enjoy spectacular sunset views.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
The critical acclimatization day. Ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630m where you may feel the altitude for the first time, then descend steeply into the Barranco Valley at 3,960m. This climb-high sleep-low pattern is the key to success on summit night.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Begin with the iconic Barranco Wall scramble, a steep hands-on rock section that is one of the most exhilarating parts of the climb. Traverse across to the Karanga Valley and make camp. This shorter day allows your body to adjust before the final push.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
A shorter but steep climb from the Karanga Valley up to Barafu Camp, the summit staging point. Arrive by early afternoon, eat a solid meal, and try to rest before the midnight departure. Your guide will brief you on the summit plan.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Depart around midnight for the final ascent through scree and switchbacks. Reach Stella Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak for sunrise at the roof of Africa. After summit celebration, descend past Barafu all the way to Mweka Camp in the forest.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Descend through beautiful rainforest on the final morning to Mweka Gate. Complete formalities, receive your summit certificate, and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for rest and celebration.
