The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the finest ways to climb Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the remote western side of the mountain through pristine rainforest, crosses the Shira Plateau, and joins the southern circuit for the final push to Uhuru Peak. The quiet early stages and gradual altitude gain make it a favourite among experienced operators and repeat climbers.
This route can be climbed in 7 days or 8 days. The 7-day version moves from Barranco directly to Barafu, while the 8-day version adds a night at Karanga Camp for an additional acclimatization day. The 8-day option has a summit success rate of approximately 93%, one of the highest on the mountain.
Both versions are camping-based and cover the same spectacular terrain, from the forest floor to the glaciers of Kilimanjaro's summit. On this page you can compare both itineraries and choose the one that best matches your pace and ambition.
January to March and June to October are the best months for the Lemosho Route, with drier trails and clearer summit weather. The route operates year-round but the western forest approach can be very muddy during the rainy seasons of April-May and November.
The shorter version moves from Barranco directly to Barafu, good for experienced trekkers comfortable with a faster summit approach.
Drive from Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After registration, the trek begins through dense montane rainforest rich with birdlife, colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys. The first camp at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) is a peaceful forest clearing.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Climb out of the forest through heather and moorland with views opening up across the Shira Plateau. This is a longer day covering significant altitude gain but the gradient is manageable. Camp on the plateau with panoramic views of Kibo cone.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
The key acclimatization day. Ascend across the plateau to Lava Tower at 4,630m, then descend steeply to Barranco Camp at 3,960m. This climb-high sleep-low strategy is critical for summit success. Expect to feel the altitude at Lava Tower before the relief of descending.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Scramble up the Barranco Wall in the morning, then traverse through the Karanga Valley and climb steadily to Barafu Camp, the summit staging point. This is a demanding day but the views are spectacular. Rest early for the midnight summit push.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Depart around midnight for the summit push. Climb through scree and switchbacks to Stella Point, then follow the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. After sunrise at the summit, descend all the way past Barafu to Mweka Camp in the forest for a well-earned rest.
Accommodation: Mountain camping
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Complete park formalities, receive your summit certificate, and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for celebration and rest.
Accommodation: End of climb or hotel add-on
Rest day in Moshi or Arusha. Optional safari extension, Zanzibar flight, or airport transfer for your onward journey. Your team can help arrange any post-climb travel.
